Ways to Help at Home

Parents are always asking of ways to help their child at home. There are many ways you can help your child. First and foremost, help your child complete his/her homework packet every week. This also includes a reading assignment. Reading is so important. There is always enough time to read a book- football practice should not be priority over education and reading!! Your child should always get a good night's sleep too. A sleepy child is not a productive one. Listed below are some ideas to help at home. If you would like additional ideas, please contact me. You may also educational purchase games and books. School Box is a great store to look at.

Reading/Language Arts:

-As stated previously, read with your child often. If he/she comes to a difficult word, do not just say the word. Help your child use reading strategies* (they should be able to name them) to figure out the word. It takes longer, but we want good readers, not dependent ones.

-Fill out a graphic organizer or story web about a book you read. Identify the story elements, beginning, middle, and end.

-Practice your phonics patterns and do dictation at home.

-Practice sight words- this could be a game like sight word bingo, matching, or sorting. For more advanced tusdents, alphabetize the words, make sentences with them, or look them up in a dictionary.

-Write letters and stories. Proofread for capitalization and punctuation. Practice adding more sentences to the begining, middle, or end.

Math:

-Practice those basic math facts!! Children should be able to identify them quickly.

-Use diferent math strategies to solve addition/subtraction problems- number line, counting back, counters etc.

-Practice place value and comparing numbers. Number sense is a definite weakness.

-Problem solve and write the answers in complete sentences- the children must know why they got the answer they did and be able to explain it.

I hope this was helpful. If you need more ideas, I have lots more.
