Wow! It is hard to believe that it is already September and we have been in school for a month now. The students have been working hard learning procedures and the new routines in the classroom. Thank you for all of your support thus far. We had a great turn out during Open House.
Here is an update and preview of the curriculum we will be working on during the month of September.
Phonincs: We have been reviewing beginning sounds and moving onto word families including short vowel word families. (at, an, in, op)
Reading: The students will continue to work in guided reading groups on books on their level. We will focus on good reading strategies ( stretch out a sound, think about what makes sense, use the picture to help). We will also begin to work on retelling strategies. As you read at home with your child, please ask them what happened in the story. We just went to the library today, so students will be bringing home library books to read. Continue working on reading logs and sight word homework!
Writing: Students are learning the strategies of a good writing--finger spaces, capitalization, punctuation, good handwriting, and stretching out sounds. Students have been learning how to brainstorm topics to write about.
Math: We will continue to work on addition strategies and move into subtraction strategies and more number sense. Please work on addition and subtraction facts to 10! The students also have weekly word problems.
Science: Ms. Bradshaw, our student teacher, will begin a unit on weather, seasons, and water! We have a special guest speaker coming soon!!
Homework: Sight Word Menus are sent home on Fridays and due the following Thursday of every week. Please read night 20 minutes and write it on the log. Practice addition and subtraction facts as well!
Important Dates:
