Guided Reading

Guided Reading Facts:

Guided Reading is ….	Guided Reading is not …
…using leveled reading materials to support the reader at each level.	…consistently using the basal with  some or all students.  The basal does not provide leveled text support for the reader.
…working with students with a common need.  A good assessment will give the teacher this data.	…working with a group of students who appear to be on the same level because of a test score.
…developing independent readers by helping them to internalize their strategies and having them reread  the same text several times to gain fluency.	…encouraging students to read text once or using round robin reading with the teacher providing the corrections.  The skill instruction is isolated from the text.

Problem Solving Steps

Identify the problem What is the problem asking me to figure out?	Information What information do we need to be able to solve the problem?  What numbers are in the story problem?
Strategies How will I solve the problem?  Will I use a picture?  Will I create a graph?  Will I solve using algorithm? Ex: 65+10=	Solve What is my solution?

About Me

Welcome to Second Grade!  My name is Exie Palfrey, and I have been teaching at Kennesaw Elementary for 7 years.  I have my Bachelors Degree from Florida State University and am dually certified in both General Education and Special Education. I have taught both first and second grade, but the majority of my years at Kennesaw Elementary have been in Second Grade.

I am married with two wonderful children, Matthew who is a Sophomore at Harrison High School, and Kelley-Anne who is a Seventh Grader at Lost Mountain Middle School.  The whole family loves tennis and my children are also musicians. Matthew plays the violin and Kelley-Anne plays the cello.

This year is going to be an exciting year!!  Our classroom theme is “Together We Can Move Mountains”.  The focus is building community, teamwork, and perseverance.  My goal is for you to become thinkers, problem solvers and mostly love learning. 

Our classroom is founded on brain based education and the basic Life Skills and Lifelong Guidelines that are necessary for a safe and challenging learning community.  With a firm foundation, all children are able to achieve and grow as lifelong learners.
