Guest Readers

The children have enjoyed our guest readers.  Mrs. Collenbaugh read some delightful and funny stories recently.  We look forward to her next visit which will be an exert from "Alice in Wonderland".  We can't wait to see the props she is bringing.  On Monday, we were lucky to have a former Kennesaw Elementary student read to the class.  I, unfortunately, was in a meeting and missed it.  However, the class told me that Ross Rubadue did a great job.  Thanks to Anna and her mom for helping to make this possible.  If you are interested in reading to the children send me a note.

Book Fair and AR

Thank you for supporting our school Book Fair and for all the wonderful books I received.  It will be difficult to decide which ones to read first.  I know the children will enjoy them.  They continue to do their personal best when they read and take AR tests.  Our class comprehension is over 90% and many are reading and testing on the required two books weekly. 

Book It

Our class and the entire Second Grade is participating in the Book It program. Your child can receive a certificate for a free pizza at Pizza Hut each month, if he or she returns the completed reading log by the last day of the month. This is just an extra incentive for doing their reading homework which is 20 minutes nightly.

Paper for Accelerated Math

Accelerated Math is going great.  The children are enthusiastic and work very hard.  However, it does require a lot of paper.  If possible please send in a pack of copy paper so we can continue to do this program as often as possible each week.  I truly believe it helps with Math and Reading.  Thanks for all your support.

Subtraction With Regrouping

We will begin subtraction with regrouping  October 26th.

Subtraction with regrouping can be difficult for some children.  Please  practice basic facts as this will give them confidence.

Matter Day

Matter Day

Friday, October 9 is Matter Day with Mrs. Palfrey's class.  This is a great time for the children to participate in some hands on activities and interact with their friends from another class.  It will be a fun, educational, and somewhat messy morning.  We look forward to seeing all the parents that have volunteered to come in and help.

Guided Reading, Reading Logs, and AR

In our Guided Reading Centers we are using context clues to help us figure out unknown words.  I am integrating Social Studies into our Reading this week.  The children are reading Native American Folk Tales.  They really enjoy this as everyone loves a good story. 

The reading logs are due on Wednesday, September 30.  This has been homework for the children the first nine weeks.  I am going to start their homework notebooks in a few weeks  and would like them to also continue to read nightly.  I appreciate all your support with the nightly reading. 

I am going to ask that each child read and take two AR tests per week.   So far the class comprehension is above 90% and it is important that all children be a part of our success.  There is time each day to read, take a test, and go to the Media Center.  If they are reading nightly this should not be a problem.  A few weeks ago the children set long term goals for reading and this is one way to help them achieve their goals.

Cherokee and Creek

Our recent field trip to the Etowah Indian Mounds was our "being there" experience for this unit in Social Studies.  The children have been working on a webquest on the Creek and Cherokee (thanks to Mrs. Palfrey). They are using all this information as well as what they experienced on the field trip to help them write their personal narratives.  A special thanks to Micah's mom (Mrs. Dickinson) for some great photos which are keeping the memories alive and helping the children to come up with some fantastic descriptions. 

Matter

We are starting our Matter unit this week.  The children will have the opportunity to explore Matter  in centers and other activities.  This is always a fun unit as it is very "hands on".    I have listed some websites you can visit at home.
