Week of November 30th

This week in our reading block we will be reading the story How Plants Grow. While reading we will be discussing sequencing and the use of transition words like first, second, & third. Throughout the week, we will continue to discuss the difference between fantasy and reality. In writing, the students will be creating graphic organizers about characters and main ideas. The students will use their graphic organizers to create a short fantasy story of their own. We will also continue to work using correct punctuation.

Our goal for first grade is that 85% of the students will accurately complete 45/50 mixed addition and subtraction problems within a ten minute time frame.

Our goal for second grade is 85% of the students will accurately complete 90/100 mixed addition and subtraction problems within a seven minute time frame.

This goal is for the end of the year and students are not expected to be able to do this now. Here are some websites to help your child practice at home.

Happy Thanksgiving

This week in reading we will not be starting a new story. I felt that with the upcoming holiday the students may not remember everything we discussed this week. Therefore, we are continuing to work on our digraphs and spelling words by tapping them out. In language arts, we starting a new genre which is fiction and poetry. We started the unit by discussing whether a story is fiction or non-fiction. Throughout the unit we will be reading many fiction stories and creating our own fairy tale. We are also continuing to work on identifying nouns and verbs. I hope everyone has a fun and relaxing Thanksgiving.

November 9th-13th

Hello Everyone - 

This week in class we will be reading the story The Weather and discussing what the main idea is. Again, I will be sending home the story to read at home with your child. While reading, ask your child these questions: what is the main idea of the story, what is another good title for this story and when is it a good time to play outside? In our phonics lesson, the students have been working on sounding out words with digraphs. This week, we will be learning how to spell digraph words such as much and path. In writing, we have been reading a story about Firemen and how illustrations help us understand the meaning of the story better. The students will be writing a thank-you letter to the local firemen in our community. 

Parents, please continue to read with your children at home. I will also be sending home any work that your child did not finish in class.
