Welcome Back

This is a very critical week for the students, CRCT. Please make sure your child is on time and has a good breakfast. The testing will begin on Wednesday at 8:15 and end on Friday.  Each day the test will last for two hours. After the test, the students will have time to relax and take a break.

Week of March 29th-2nd

Well, one week until spring break and one week closer to CRCT. This week we will continue reviewing for CRCT in math, reading, and language arts. In our reading block, we will begin working on the main idea of stories by reading the story Detective Joe. This is a fun story where students will have to help Joe find clues to solve his mystery and by discussing what the main idea of the story is. We will be having a comprehension review on Friday for this story. In phonics we will begin working on the silent e rule. We will continue to work on this skill after spring break as well. In our writing block, we have begun writing to persuade. This week we will be working on writing captions for pictures. This will help the students work up to having to write an essay on persuading someone about a certain issue or topic. This is our last genre for writing. Therefore, we will continue working on writing to persuade for the remainder of the year. 

Week of March 1st-5th

This week in our reading block we will be reading the story "A Brave Man in Space." I have send home copies of the story to read with your children. While reading, please discuss the setting and events in the story. The students will be having a comprehension test on Friday. In our writing block, we will be discussing the different parts of a letter and how to write one. We will be working on this for the next two weeks. 

Remember that the CRCT is five weeks away. We have been practicing bubbling answering and reviewing practice questions in class. Please practice at home with your child.

Week of February 1-5

Hello Everyone,

  I hope everyone had a fun weekend. This week in our reading block we are starting the story Crossing the Street. This story focus on procedures and using transistion words such as first, second, third, ect.  I am sending home the story on Monday and please read it with your child. They will be having their comprehension test on Friday.  This nine week in our writer's workshop, the students will be writing to inform. This week they will be working on creating venn diagrams and identifying verbs in sentences.

Conference Week

Just a reminder that the students will be getting out of school at 12:10 for conferences. This week in our reading block the students will be taking their comprehension review test on All About Horses on Wednesday. Please make sure to review the story with your children. Also this week students will  be introduced to the character Braidy. This character is a fun way to help the students with reading comprehension skills and writing. I will be sending home more information about this new program next week.

Week of January 11th

Hello Everyone,

 This week in reading we are continuing to read Farmers Grays Morning. Please make sure you read this story at home with your child. We have a unit assessment at the end of each story and I want all the children to do their best. In our phonics unit, the students will continue working on silent consent letters or bonus letters. The students are grasping this concept very rapidly. For this nine weeks of school, the focus in our writers workshop is learning how to write to inform. The students will begin this process by learning how to brainstorm using graphic organizers. We are also continuing to work on nouns and will been discussing verbs in the next couple of weeks.

Welcome Back

I hope everyone had a fun and relaxing winter break as did I. We will begin our week back to school by reviewing what we had previously learned before the break. We will be finishing our unit on fantasy stories and the students will be creating their own by the end of the week. In reading, we will be starting a new unit on silent consonant sounds. We will be working on this for the next couple of weeks. An additional note, I will be starting to send home review worksheets to start preparing you child for the CRCT. Week of November 30th

This week in our reading block we will be reading the story How Plants Grow. While reading we will be discussing sequencing and the use of transition words like first, second, & third. Throughout the week, we will continue to discuss the difference between fantasy and reality. In writing, the students will be creating graphic organizers about characters and main ideas. The students will use their graphic organizers to create a short fantasy story of their own. We will also continue to work using correct punctuation.

Our goal for first grade is that 85% of the students will accurately complete 45/50 mixed addition and subtraction problems within a ten minute time frame.

Our goal for second grade is 85% of the students will accurately complete 90/100 mixed addition and subtraction problems within a seven minute time frame.
