Reading Guide for Parents Mrs. Kulkarni
Dear Parents:
The following link contains a list of questions through which you can help your child to be a more successful reader. After your child reads a story, I recommend that you sit down with your child and ask him/her a few of the following questions. Your child should choose and answer at least two questions from each category. The questions are designed so that your child will learn to think critically, make distinctions, draw conclusions and employ his/her own creative abilities.

Counting On
Counting on is a useful strategy to teach children how to add. Mental math is the goal, but at first children might need manipulatives and/or pictures. Counting on is teaching the children to put the greatest number in their head and then count on wtih the remaining number. Example: If the children are adding 40 + 7 they should put the greatest number (40) in their head and keep on counting 7 more. We continue to work on this throughout the year. This is a wonderful strategy for quickly adding two numbers.
