Homework will come home every Friday and needs to return to school the next Thursday. The assignments will review and reinforce concepts learned in class. Please explain the directions to your child before he or she starts the assignment. Then your child should work independently (with assistance as needed) before you review the homework together.
First graders should read on a daily basis. Your child needs to read for 20 minutes a day, at least five days a week. Also, please practice the sight word list sent home with the homework packet. As your child masters more sight words (instant recall), he/she will gain confidence as a reader and spend less time trying to decode words that don't necessarily follow phonics rules.
Also, please practice addition and subtraction facts whenever possible. Your child is expected to know (again, instant recall) all addition and subtraction facts to 18 by the end of first grade.
Thank you for your help reinforcing what your child learns at school!
