First graders should read on a daily basis. Your child should read for 20 minutes a day, at least five days a week. Also, please practice the sight word list sent home every week. As your child masters more sight words (instant recall), he/she will gain confidence as a reader and spend less time trying to decode words that don't necessarily follow phonics rules.
Also, please practice addition and subtraction facts whenever possible. Your child is expected to know (again, instant recall) all addition and subtraction facts to 18 by the end of first grade.
Thank you for your help reinforcing what your child learns at school!
PS: More information about homework will be shared at Open House!
